Many people believe that disposal works like a blender, with blades spinning to chop and break down the waste.

But in reality, disposals work in a distinct way, and there are no blades involved. Rather, impellers, or lugs, mounted on a spinning plate in order to continuously force food waste particles against a stationary grind ring. Impellers are usually short cylinders with an open inlet (called an eye) to accept incoming fluid, vanes to push the fluid radially, and a splined, keyed, or threaded bore to accept a drive-shaft.

The grind ring tears down the food waste into very fine particles, practically dissolving them. When ground, the running water washes the particles through the grind ring and out of the disposal and into your waste water pipe. It then flows to a wastewater treatment plant or your septic system.
